Summer Sermon Series - James and 1 Peter

(22nd July – 2nd Sept)

Faith in Action - In the morning services, we are thinking about the practical difference faith should make to our lives.  Who better to teach us than James, who is keen to show how faith and ethics, belief and behaviour, go hand in hand.

A Holy Calling - In the evening, we are delving into Peter's first letter to the scattered churches of the 1st century.  He is determined to encourage the disheartened, and to remind all his readers of their high and holy calling in Christ.

Mission of the Month
Christians Against Poverty (CAP)

CAP is a national charity with its HQ in Bradford and 200 centres across the UK. John Kirkby, who set it up in 1996, has just been awarded a CBE for his inspirational work in setting up this debt counselling scheme.  CAP now helps more than 26,000 people every year, and handles £47m of debt on behalf of their clients.

Please pray for Rachel, Manager of the Centre at St Johns Penge, and the 30 plus clients that she is helping, as well as for CAP’s work in this country and abroad.  Read more about this well-respected and much-needed organisation on the display at the back of church.

Foodbank

Many thanks for all the donations, which are greatly appreciated.

In August we are supporting the foodbank at CAP (Penge).  Levels of food are always low at this time of year, as children are at home and not receiving school meals.  CAP would be particularly grateful for the following:

  • Long-life milk
  • Tins of meat, fish, vegetables, tomatoes, beans, soup and fruit
  • Cereals, pasta, rice
  • Tea, coffee, sugar
  • Men’s toiletries, especially shower gel/deodorant
  • Toilet rolls
  • Large nappies
  • Women’s sanitary products
  • Strong carrier bags

Please put all items (no pet food please) in the clear plastic box in the north aisle.

Collects for August

10th after Trinity (5th August) Lord of heaven and earth, as Jesus taught his disciples to be persistent in prayer, give us patience and courage never to lose hope, but always to bring our prayers before you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

11th after Trinity (12th August) – God of glory, the end of our searching,
help us to lay aside all that prevents us from seeking your kingdom,
and to give all that we have to gain the pearl beyond all price, through our Saviour Jesus Christ.  Amen.

12th after Trinity (19th August) – God of constant mercy, who sent your Son to save us: remind us of your goodness, increase your grace within us,
that our thankfulness may grow, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

13th after Trinity (26th August) - Almighty God, you search us and know us:
may we rely on you in strength and rest on you in weakness, now and in all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Please pray

  • for safe travel and a time of rest and relaxation during the summer.
  • for comfort and healing for those who are unwell; for the elderly, those coping with health issues and the vulnerable.

Prayer of St Thomas Aquinas

Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you.  Amen.
