Among God’s Giants: Genesis from Abraham to Joseph

The world around us is changing. In this fluid culture, we may find ourselves seeking a sense stability and consistency. We are searching for a firm foundation, upon which we can securely plant our feet and wrestle with the morphing demands of modern life. Throughout the centuries, Christians have seen God as precisely this foundation.

This term we are thinking about God’s faithfulness, his steadfastness in an unsteady world. This is clearly seen in the way God keeps his covenant-promises from one generation to the next. Starting with Abraham, we will trace the story of God’s dependable promises. We will see how His faithfulness remains unshaken, even in the uneasy era of the Patriarchs. The series concludes with the story of Joseph, for whom God was an unshakable source of hope through many trials.

The Psalms: Soul Food for all Seasons

Joy, fear, grief - every season of the soul is captured in the Psalms. When we have no words of our own, the Psalms can give voice to the deep thoughts of the heart. But how do we make sense of the Psalms as a whole? Are they 150 independent poems, or is there something which holds them together? This sermon series will look at the different types of Psalm. We will look at ten different styles or genre. Appreciating these different styles will enrich our reading of the Psalter – just as knowing the difference between science-fiction and biography helps us to get the most out of a good book.

This sermon series will lead us through songs of praise, pained cries of lament, and soaring prayers of thanksgiving. It is my hope that this series will help us to articulate our innermost joys and concerns before God.
